The scheduled primary of the Ali Modu Sheriff
faction of the PDP in Edo State expected to hold today - Wednesday, June 29 at the Samuel Ogbemudia
Stadium, Benin suffered a setback as security men took over the venue.
The Primary had Member Representing Egor and Ikpoba Okha Federal
Constituency Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma and former Majority Leader Edo House
of Assembly, Mr. Matthew Iduoriyemkemwen as aspirants.
Policemen and Officials of the Nigerian
Security and Civil Defence Corps took over the venue – the Samuel Ogbemudia
Stadium and barred athletes and other persons from entering the Stadium.
A police officer who spoke on the condition of
anonymity said they had been instructed not to allow anybody enter the
premises, a directive from above.
The first set of delegates arrived the venue
at about 20 minutes to ten o’clock and left shortly.
No INEC Official was seen at the venue while
an unidentified man was removing the campaign poster of one of the aspirants.
A musical band contracted to play for the
factional delegates at the primary were denied access to the venue.
Some staff of Ministry of Sports and athletes
who came to train at the stadium but were turned back by security agents
frowned at the development.
